When most people think of the Gion Festival, they think of the Yamahoko-junko procession and Yoiyama, the day before the procession. Originally a festival of Yasaka Shrine in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Shinto rituals and events are held at the shrine and in Ujiko-machi for a period of one month from July 1, the start of the festival.
